Today we are all looking for ways to live with the least impact on the natural world as possible. We are looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles, switching to reusable cloth bags for shopping, and designing homes that are environmentally friendly. It is even possible to take a home built decades ago and make it better for the environment when we are about the business of remodeling with green in mind.
There are countless ways to remodel a home and make it more environmentally friendly. One of the least expensive remodeling projects is a new paint job, and you can make your paint job more “green” by choosing paints with low VOC numbers. VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, which are those chemicals that can give off environmentally harmful fumes for years after the painting has been completed. The lower the VOC number, the lower the amount of damaging fumes are released and the lower the damage to the environment.
Homeowners can also choose eco-friendly flooring options when they remodel their home. Instead of synthetic carpets that require the use of fossil fuels for production, consider a natural fiber carpet or a wood floor constructed from wood that comes from renewable forests. Composite flooring made from recyclable material is also an excellent choice for those remodeling with green in mind.
Our list of green remodeling options could go on almost forever, but choosing solar energy in remodeling projects is another great way to go green. Photovoltaic cells can produce electricity from sunlight, cutting down on the power you need from the local utility company. Solar water heaters can also achieve the same end. Installing solar panels can be costly on the front end, but over time you will save money on utility costs and have a lower impact on the environment.

I’m planning on remodeling my home and going “green” is something I’ve been thinking about. I do wonder how much these eco-friendly alternatives might set me back in terms of dollars. But I’m sure, you can’t put a price tag on protecting the environment.
